Transforming Artisans into Shareholders
Transforming Artisans into Shareholders
Rangsutra is a community owned craft company of over a thousand artisans from remote regions of India. They ensure sustainable livelihoods for artisans and farmers by creating top quality handmade products based on the principles of fair trade and a celebration of India’s rich craft heritage.
CONNECTING FOR INDIA seeks ways to creatively co create and collaborate with Rangsutra’s collective of women artisans in its various regions throughout India.
In 2007 its founder, Sumita Ghose, created a business that could support rural artisans establish working capital. Without the primary collateral needed to secure loans from the bank, she invited artisans to invest their own funds in exchange for shares. Women now owned their own share certificates, which placed them in unique and empowered position in relation to their husband, whom traditionally held ownership over all monetary funds.

Rangsutra x SALONI Ralli Quilts
CONNECTING FOR INDIA collaborated with Rangsutra’s artisans to upcycle leftover SALONI fabrics into one-of-a-kind ‘ralli’ quilts to create employment and to further empower women artisans.
